Latitude and longitude explained
Latitude measures how far north or south of the equator a point is, from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles. Longitude measures how far east or west of the prime meridian at Greenwich it is, from 0° to 180°. Together they pin any spot on Earth. Positive latitude is north, negative is south; positive longitude is east, negative is west.
A degree of latitude is always about 111 km. A degree of longitude is 111 km at the equator but shrinks with the cosine of latitude: about 78 km at 45° and zero at the poles, where all meridians meet.

How do I find the latitude and longitude of a place?

Which comes first, latitude or longitude?
Latitude (north–south) comes first, then longitude (east–west): 48.8584, 2.2945 is the Eiffel Tower. Some formats such as GeoJSON reverse the order, so check before pasting.
How many decimal places do I need?
Four decimals is about 11 m, five is about 1.1 m and six is about 11 cm at the equator. Five is plenty for finding a building; consumer GPS is rarely better than 3–5 m.
